Neal Road pub crawl for the gurls
When I have time, I reconnoiter new safe places for our sggurls so that they can meet in a safe comforable place, feel welcome and at the same time support lgbt businesses.
Neal Road is peppered with lgbt friendly bars. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Neil+Rd/@1.27925,103.8417907,20z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x31da196dec7e1a0b:0x72c8e9159c4e3df4!8m2!3d1.2780473!4d103.8405167!16s%2Fm%2F02625ym
As Covid curbs lift, bars that were once friendly to trans are no longer so. Friendlier to $$$ are they focussing on selling whisky bottles, segregrating the VIPs from the rest of us. Illuzion is definitely not friendly on the purse and I defnitely didn't feel welcome. The greeting I got when I walked in was, "you can sit outside." That's fine, I'll sit way way outside of their bar about 1km away. As we walked by other bars, the doors that were once open, were shut. They want the big spenders and not a few gurls that just want to hang out and get 1-2 drinks. Our paltry $ no longer satiate their revenue.

Covid has made Chinatown landlords rabid
Chinatown rental for F&B pre-Covid was SGD9-12 psf (per square foot). During COVID many of the shops were vacant between 8-14 months. Landlords lowered the rental rate to SGD7-9 psf. Post Covid, these same landlords are rabid with greed. Commercial guru results shows 15-45 psf rental rate in Chinarown driving the same businesses that parachuted in during Covid to save their landlord's rapacious butt. The bars that I go to will not be able to support a 15-45psf rental. Singapore Tourism Board which manages road stalls at arm's length through Chinatown Business Association (CBA). They realize that business are still struggling offered rental relief. https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/year-long-extension-of-rental-relief-for-chinatown-street-market-tenants

In land scarce Singapore, you don't own any property. Land come in leases from the Singapore government. There are various leases: 999 years, 99 years, 60 years, 33 years and variants of these numbers. Private property owners are so motivated to suck in profits for the length of their lease. Inevitably, rental prices goes sky high. A black eye to F&B businesses. F&B (food and beverage, typically covering hawkers to hotel) in Singapore is a cut throat business. The goverment over issues food licenses. It's yet to be proven that they do this intentionally. Food licenses are money generators. It also complements the country's employment statistics. Why not make money and look good on the report card? An uber competitive over-crowded industry is the second black eye to F&B business owners. The third whack is a labor quota system that limits F&B businesses to hire foreigners. The government makes F&B businesses take the punch in the lip whilst asking the business owners to stiff their upper lip, close their eyes by the use of ridiculous productivity grants that breed a greedy industry of cheats and snake oil sellers.

SGGURLS 2023
SGGURLS 2023
SGGURLS an umbrella group that encompasses the spectrum of trangendrism in Singapore spanned 15 years to become the oldest surviving transgender group in Singapore.

The SGGURLs flag was designed by several very talented individuals who would have been stars in the graphic design world if they were not in our little marginalized world. The first design was done by Trish Leong on 2007. Her signature still emblazons the SGGURLS logo..

The design was modifed by Kayla when she was taking design classes.

10 years later, the design was improved by Carmen Victoria Love.

SGGURLS is 15 years old. It’s a testament to the principle that transgender is a spectrum and each individual chooses which part of the spectrum they are comfortable in. Why is SGGURLS different than past transgender group? There’s no leader in the group, only volunteers, organizers and clusters of friends. Secondly, SGGURLS does not point any of its participants to a particular destination such as full transitioning. SGGURLS members are very diverse. Each has very complex situation that the deal with. We don’t advise or prescribe. Each person is the captain of their lives. When we meet we talk about many things and share some of the trans hacks.
Yesterday was a very special day. An afternoon visit from a dear friend who founded SGGURLS with me. At night, a quiet celebration in a non-descript lesbian bar in Singapore’s lgbt belt with some friends. 95 clubstreet was one of our earliest favorite meeting point.

SGGURLS has a private facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/1567083706923641
There are events organized weekly usually be different members in the group. All are welcome.
